‘Down-home cooking’: MrSippy BBQ to bring southern-style cuisine to Rochester

When Cecil Abels III thinks of true home cooking, he thinks of trips to his father’s hometown in Mississippi with his Mamaw in the kitchen cooking biscuits, breakfast and other favorites from scratch.

Abels started MrSippy BBQ as a catering company in 2014 to bring southern-style cuisine to the Seacoast. In 2019, MrSippy BBQ was slated to shift to a food truck operation, but when that fell through Abels rented out kitchen space from Dante’s Pasta & Vino in Barrington, where it temporarily operated as a takeout-only business.

MrSippy BBQ has now found a dine-in home following last year’s closure of Benedict’s Grill at 184 S Main St., a former staple in the Rochester community.
