‘So many stories’: Meet superheroes and artists of Free Comic Book Day on Seacoast

If Thanos was looking for a fight on Saturday, the Seacoast region was not the place to have it.

Milling about Rochester were Thor, armed with his enchanted weapon “Stormbreaker,” and Captain America with his trusty shield. Even erstwhile X-Man Deadpool was on hand ready to do battle should the intergalactic supervillain make an appearance.

Those superheroes were joined by costumed figures from all realms of the comic book world on Saturday, roaming the streets and seeking free books offered by comic retailers as part of Free Comic Book Day, a national tradition celebrating its 20th anniversary, losing only last year to the pandemic.

In Rochester, Jetpack Comics has celebrated the event for 15 years, with an extravaganza across multiple venues. Thousands of visitors come for the comics but also, for many, the chance for cosplay, to be their favorite character. The event takes place at the North Main Street store, but also at businesses throughout Rochester. The event hall at Governor’s Inn offers activities and signings by comic book legends, and a costume contest at The Garage.
