Rochester will show its appreciation for law enforcement and ‘Paint the City Blue’ on September 18, 2021, which is National Thank A Police Officer Day.

“Paint the City Blue was formed in order to give residents and business owners the opportunity to thank the Police Department for their work,” said Laura Ring, Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce. “It’s is a great way for the community to come together for something positive.”

According to the event website, residents and businesses are encouraged to participate by displaying a ribbon or bow in their front yards, on a tree, or on their mailboxes. They can also replace a porch light bulb with a blue one, string blue Christmas lights on a small tree or shrub, put up a yard sign, or anything else in the spirit of the event. The idea to to inspire the community to be creative and find ways to symbolically thank law enforcement.

On Monday, September 13, Students from Spaulding High School and Rochester Middle School spent the day painting encouraging messages on downtown store windows. Spaulding High Art teacher, Jennifer Daly, described the project as a bonding experience between students and police.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to create a positive message through art,” said Daly. “Many police officers stopped by and thanked the students. It was also an opportunity for our students to thank and show appreciation for the Police Department. It’s always inspiring to see the community come together.”

Paint the City Blue is a collaboration between the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce, Rochester Rotary Club, Holy Rosary Credit Union, Rochester Elks Lodge #1393, Rochester Main Street, Groen Construction, The Ridge, and many other sponsors and participants.
