City of Rochester Taking Steps to Improve Safety in The Hanson Pines

Published on

The City of Rochester is actively working to enhance the safety, accessibility, and long-term preservation of Dominicus Hanson Park, also known as The Pines or Hanson Pines.

This effort follows an incident on Monday, September 16, when the Rochester Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of an explosion and fire in the wooded area of the park. Upon arrival, emergency personnel extinguished a large fire at what appeared to be an encampment. No individuals were found at the scene, and no injuries were reported.

To improve security, park rules will be posted at all major entrances, and the Police Department has increased patrols in the area. Additionally, the City is considering installing security cameras at key entrance points of both the park and the playground.

The Recreation Department is working with Moreno Forestry to explore options for improving sight lines and visibility into the park while adhering to the Forest Management Plan, which prioritizes preserving the old-growth pine forest, as outlined in the property’s deed.

At this time, City Manager Katie Ambrose discourages volunteers from attempting debris removal. To prepare for a professional cleanup in early October, the Department of Public Works is surveying the entire park with a local contractor that specializes in the removal of biohazardous materials and other debris.

The public is reminded that camping on City property is discouraged. If you or someone you know is unhoused or experiencing homelessness, please contact your local Welfare Department or call “211.” Many social service agencies can direct you toward help, as the tri-city area practices a “no wrong door” information referral system.

Rochester Welfare Director Todd Marsh has shared that homelessness is a nationwide, multifaceted challenge that requires a multipronged, common-ground approach. He stated, “I am confident we will continue to solution-find with our helping partners and invest toward our shared community and statewide goal of making homelessness rare, brief, and survivable when it occurs. This will have a positive effect on those in need and the community’s public health and safety as a whole.”
