The New Hampshire Department of Safety’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) will provide preparedness information and safety tips for residents and visitors during this year’s Flood Safety Awareness Week from March 9-15.
According to the National Weather Service, 181 people in the United States died during floods in 2024.
Flooding is the top natural hazard that affects New Hampshire. In 2024, the Granite State had three storms that resulted in federally declared disasters due to damages related to flooding.
“As snow melts and spring rain approaches, I encourage everyone to take steps to ensure you and your family are ready in the event of an emergency,” said Governor Kelly Ayotte. “Thank you to all of our emergency response personnel for their efforts to keep our state safe and ensure Granite Staters are prepared.”
Each day during Flood Safety Awareness week, HSEM will share information on its social media channels on how to be prepared in the event of a flood.
“New Hampshire communities have had to deal with severe flooding the last few years far too frequently,” said HSEM Director Robert Buxton. “Residents and visitors can take steps to remain safe during a flood. This week is the perfect opportunity to go over your family’s emergency plan and review your emergency kit.”
