Mayor: Memorial Day is a time to reflect and show appreciation

During the Memorial Day weekend ‘Field of Honor’ ceremony, Mayor Paul Callaghan was on hand to provide remarks and thank Vouchers for Veterans, a nonprofit organization, for volunteering to display 550 full-size American flags honoring those that have served in the U.S. military.

“For some, Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer. A weekend for backyard barbecues and family gatherings. It’s a day off from work, a day at the beach perhaps… But for many others, and rightfully so, Memorial Day is a time to reflect on what American soldiers, sailors, and airmen and women have done for the people of the United States, and indeed, the world.

This Memorial Day weekend we reflect and remember those who died while honorable serving in the U.S. military — protecting our rights and fighting for our freedoms, including the right to freely assemble, as we are doing here today; the right to freely express our opinions; the freedom to hold our own individual religious views, and more. We remember those that answered the call of duty, sacrificed, and gave their lives while protecting our liberties and the quality of life we Americans share.

On behalf of the City Council and the people of Rochester, New Hampshire, I want to thank Vouchers for Veterans and all the volunteers that made this event possible.

This beautiful and moving display of 550 flags is truly a sight to behold. I encourage everyone to walk through the display, look at the names and ranks that are attached to each flag pole, and take the time to appreciate the magnitude of their service as well as those that made the ultimate sacrifice.

I ask the people of this city to think about what they can do to show their appreciation for those that have given so much. Consider supporting Vouchers for Veterans by making a donation, large or small. This nonprofit organization works hard to provide healthy food to our local veterans. They also provide much-needed support and other resources. Most of all, they provide fellowship to all the veterans they encounter.

This weekend might be a great time for a barbecue; to gather with family and neighbors, but I also hope the people of Rochester will think about what it means to be an American, and remember those marines, sailors, and airmen and women that did not make it back home. I hope we’ll take the time to appreciate the great sacrifice the men and women of the armed forces have given to our City, State, and our nation. Thank you”
