Prevent Falls: Take Steps to Protect Yourself as You Age

Falling is NOT a normal part of aging, and it can have serious consequences for older adults. The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office is dedicated to helping residents reduce their risk of falls, one of the leading causes of injury and death among people aged 65 and older.

According to the New Hampshire Division of Health & Human Services, falls are a major concern for older adults in the state. In 2021, falls resulted in 239 deaths, 4,011 hospitalizations, and 14,268 emergency department visits among those 65 and older. With an estimated 20% of New Hampshire’s population over age 65, and one in four older adults expected to fall each year, this is a critical issue for many families.

Fortunately, falls are preventable. Evidence-based programs have proven effective in reducing the risk of falls through cost-efficient strategies such as exercise programs to improve balance and strength, medication management, vision care, home hazard reduction, and falls prevention education. If you’re looking for local programs that can help, visit NHfalls.org for more information on falls prevention resources in New Hampshire.

Additionally, the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office and the New Hampshire Falls Risk Reduction Task Force encourage residents to use a free online falls risk assessment tool available at the National Council on Aging’s website. By visiting Falls Free Checkup, individuals can complete a brief survey that helps identify common falls risk factors.

NH State Fire Marshal Sean P. Toomey emphasizes the importance of these preventive measures, stating, “We’re proud to support initiatives that empower older adults to age well and avoid falls. Taking a few simple steps can make a big difference in maintaining your independence and safety.”
