Rochester Police Issue Back-to-School Driving Safety Reminder

Published on

With the first week of school upon us, the Rochester Police Department is urging all drivers to be extra cautious and adjust their driving habits. As students return to school, there will be an increase in foot traffic, with children walking to and from school, crossing streets, and boarding buses. Expect traffic in school zones to be more congested and slower during drop-off and pick-up hours.

After a summer without the regular presence of school buses and children on the streets, we remind drivers that now is the time to refresh their knowledge of school zones and school bus safety. To help ensure the safety of all students, the Rochester Police Department offers the following safety tips:

  • Obey School Zone Signals: Be vigilant for school zone signals and always follow posted speed limits.
  • Slow Down in School Zones: Reduce your speed and adhere to all traffic laws when entering a school zone.
  • Stop for School Buses: It is imperative to stop for school buses that are loading or unloading children.
  • Follow Crossing Guard Instructions: Pay attention to school crossing guards and obey their directions.
  • Stay Alert Around Schools: Be mindful of children near schools, bus stops, sidewalks, streets, and school parking lots.
  • No Passing in School Zones: Passing other vehicles in a school zone is strictly prohibited.
  • Stay in Your Lane: Avoid changing lanes or making U-turns while in a school zone.
  • Avoid Distractions: Refrain from texting while driving. Remember that New Hampshire enforces a hands-free driving law.
  • Use Proper Drop-Off Areas: Do not use handicapped or emergency vehicle lanes or spaces for dropping off or picking up children unless you are licensed to do so.

The Rochester Police Department emphasizes the importance of paying attention to active red bus signals, stop signs, speed limits, crosswalks, and your surroundings. Your vigilance is crucial in ensuring the safety of our students as they return to school.
