The Rochester Police Department is reminding residents that electric bicycles (e-bikes) are subject to New Hampshire law and encouraging riders to understand the rules before heading out.

Under New Hampshire law, electric bicycles are treated the same as traditional bicycles. As a result, riders are not required to have a driver’s license, register their e-bike, or carry insurance. However, e-bike riders are required to follow the same rules of the road as traditional bicyclists.

New Hampshire law recognizes three classifications of electric bicycles under RSA 265:144-a.

The Rochester Police Department encourages everyone enjoying this form of transportation to ride safely and become familiar with the applicable laws. Anyone with questions is encouraged to contact an on-duty Rochester Police Officer at (603) 330-7128.
