Rochester Public Library: Weekly Update

Written by Stephanie Piro Nolan

Our talented Children’s Room staff, Jen and Kait, have put together an original shadow puppet video. And some of the Main Desk staff are working on a new series of book recommendation animated videos. We hope to offer these on our social media on a regular basis. Stay tuned!

RPL Recommends Animated Videos
We have a new way of recommending book, dvd and audiobook titles! Main Desk Librarian (and syndicated cartoonist), Stephanie, and Main Desk Librarians, Karyl, and Nick, have created a series of animated videos recommending books and DVDs, and other items. See them on our Facebook and Instagram accounts.

On Display
Beat the heat with these Audiobook chillers! Going on a road trip or just hanging around the house this summer, you can stop by and pick out a thriller that will make any highway driving or house cleaning project a lot more riveting and intense! Some of our favorites include :

  1. Have You Seen Me by Kate White
  2. Never Let Me Go by Chevy Stevens
  3. Under My Skin by Lisa Unger
  4. The Silent Patient by Alex Michalides

Returns
Returned items will no longer be quarantined. You can continue to put your returned books and magazines in the drive-up drop box and DVDs and audiobooks in the dropbox next to the building by the Children’s Room entrance. You may also bring your returns inside and place them in the Main Desk and Children’s drop slots if you are here to browse.

Book Review
Main Desk Librarian, Amy, shares a favorite book: “Ladies of the Secret Circus by Constance Sayers. “I’m a sucker for a good circus book. This book had me on the edge of my seat the whole time! There are so many nuggets and twists that I couldn’t get enough.  It takes place during the Jazz Age in Paris and in modern-day America with multiple generations of women plagued by mysterious tragedies.  It is a mystery and a thriller with magic, hell, love, art, and family.  I don’t know how the author fit it all in one book!  Highly recommended!”

Adult Summer Reading
Read anything you like and then track your reading using the Beanstack app (or website). All you have to do is keep track of how many minutes you’ve read (or paper logs are available in the Library and on our website). The Beanstack app has a built-in stopwatch, but you can also use any form of timekeeping and then enter that number of minutes into your Beanstack account. In the app you will win badges, prizes, and raffle tickets as you go. Some examples of prizes include Friends of the Library tote bags, protective book sleeves, a super soft and cozy reading cushion, and the grand raffle prize of a Samsung tablet (compatible with both Overdrive/Libby and hoopla).

For more information and to register, head on over to the Library’s website: rpl.lib.nh.us

Summer Reading Program 2021: Tails & Tales
Join our Summer Reading Program! We are also using Beanstack for logging completed books online. This year, we are counting minutes instead of books. Kids can earn weekly badges online, and a completion prize will be awarded to kids who read 500 minutes or more. The program will run for 7 weeks, ending Friday, August 6th.

Programs
In order to maintain a healthy environment for all, we will not be offering programs inside the library. All of our programs will be held outdoors on the lawn and will be weather-dependent. Programs will not have sign-ups, although there may be age limitations due to the skill level required or the nature of the activity. Pop-up programs will be announced on our Facebook page by 9:15 a.m., or you can sign up for our email notifications by going to this link: bit.lyrplchnewsletter

Shadow Puppet Show
Children’s Room librarians, Jen and Kait, created an original shadow puppet show on our YouTube channel! Find out How the Bear Lost His Tail followed by a short tutorial on how to make your own shadow puppets.

ASL (American Sign Language) Workshop
This workshop is an informal program where we will learn the ABCs and 123s of American Sign Language. We will start with the manual alphabet (fingerspelling) and numbers.

Crafts

  1. Playdough Porcupine: for ages 2 and up.
  2. Woodland animal masks: for ages 2 and up.
  3. Fluffy Skunk picture: for ages 2 and up.

*Children can drop by for crafts. Older children may attend independently, but younger children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult.

Drop-in Story Times: We will offer drop-in storytimes geared for children age 2 through 6, but all families are welcome! Bring a blanket and meet on the lawn.

Teen Summer Reading Program
The Teen Summer Reading Program, Tails & Tales, runs through August 6 and is free for any teens entering Grades 6-12. Pick up a reading log in the library or on our website. Read at least 2 hours a week for a Golicks coupon and a small prize plus a chance to win the weekly raffle. You can read anything including books, magazines, newspapers, and graphic novels. Read to yourself or read aloud to someone. You can even listen to an audiobook. And do not forget, there are PRIZES! Answer Trivia questions and do book reviews to win candy. Reading logs are entered into a raffle at the end of the program. The more weeks you participate, the greater your chances of winning!
