The Franklin Gallery at RiverStones Custom Framing, 33 N. Main Street in Rochester, presents “A Selection of Paintings from the Isle of Skye,” an exhibition featuring a series of works by local Rochester artist Sherry Palmer. The exhibit will be on display during the month of April. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 11, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.
On the Isle of Skye, on the Northwest coast of Scotland, Sherry found the perfect catalyst for how she enjoys painting: vast vistas uncluttered by poles or buildings, bold shapes, the “bones” of the land that in New England she can only see in winter when the leaves are gone. “Theatrical light and moving mist continually redefine the structure of the land. From one hillside ‘studio’, I can see ten islands, a mountain range of black rock, several shorelines, and a sky on its own worthy of a painting,” says Palmer. “One mountain, Benin Sgritheall, has been my focus for the last several years.”
Sherry enjoys painting outside, on site. “My subject is the landscape—the shore, islands, hills, and sky. I usually complete a painting in one sitting; on rare occasions I return to work on the same painting another day. More often, I return the next day and begin a new painting; after all, the tide is different, shapes, lines, and colors have all changed; and nature is presenting a completely new beauty for me to see. “
She has traveled to Skye for over 34 years, living there for 2 years on an artist visa. “The island landscape helped make me a better painter; I return every year to rekindle the lessons of my first journey and to continue to strengthen my voice.”
Palmer received her BA and MAT from the University of New Hampshire. She has exhibited extensively in galleries throughout New England as well as in Scotland.more information about Sherry Palmer and her artwork can be found at www.sherryskye.com.
