RPL Time Capsule

Rochester Public Library recently collaborated with other city departments to assemble a 2020 time capsule.  We thought that it would be interesting to preserve some of the unique things we experienced during 2020, both personally and professionally.

The library included artwork done by some of our librarians, award-winning book lists, news articles that chronicle the turbulent election, social unrest, and writings that chronicle the work environment. A staff picture was created in stages and photo-shopped to allow all staff to remain socially distant.  One librarian included a smaller capsule housed in a wipes container, another a crocheted Bernie Sanders.

Other departments included programming highlights and the Rochester Police Department contributed trading cards of current officers.  With the help of Building and Grounds, we were able to acquire the mask worn by the downtown statue of Parson Main and paired it with a photo by Rochester photographer John Gisis.

The capsule will be sealed and stored in the Libraries Special Collections room with instructions to be opened in 2050.

Browsing Appointments

Browsing is by appointment is back! There are a limited number of appointments per hour, so make sure to call before coming to the Library. Daily hours vary so please see the website for a current listing. Remember that masks that completely cover the nose and mouth must be worn for the entirety of your library visit.  Curbside pick-up and appointments for computer/copier/Wi-Fi use will continue to be available.  For more information, or to schedule an appointment, please call 332-1428 ext 2.

RPL-To-Go

RPL-To-Go is still available for anyone uncomfortable about choosing books in person. You can request books, DVDs, music CDs, audiobooks and even magazines. Just place items on hold in our catalog, call 603-332-1428 ext. 2, or email us at rochesterlibrary.togo@gmail.com with your requests.

Book Character Scavenger Hunt:

RPL Children’s Room will be holding a scavenger hunt over the February school vacation.  Start at the Library, where Scavenger Hunt Riddle Packets can be picked up in the ground floor lobby starting Sat, Feb 20 through Sat, Feb 27.  Solve the riddles to find downtown businesses or city buildings where small book character silhouettes are in a window. Identify the character and move on to the next riddle! The hunt is designed for all ages. Younger children may need assistance. Allow approx. 45-90 min to complete the hunt. This is a no-contact program and can be completed even if a business is closed.  We hope that while families are searching for their next book character, they will also get excited about visiting downtown businesses!  To be entered for randomly drawn prizes, return your completed form no later than Monday, March 1.

Blind Date with a Book

Blind dates can be iffy, but have no fear! We have chosen a selection of entertaining reads for any adult. Request them through RPL-To-Go email:  rochesterlibrary.togo@gmail.com, call us at 603-332-1428, or choose one when you make your browsing appointment. Hopefully, you’ll fall in love with your blind date, and be ready to try another! Book Blind Dates will be available through the end of February.

Virtual Book Club

Our next title will be Big Girl, Small Town by Michelle Gallen. Our discussion will be Tuesday, March 9th at 1 pm and will be held via Webex Meetings. Registration is free but space for this program is limited. E-book copies are available to download through hoopla. (This format can be read on a computer, any tablet, a Kindle or other electronic reader, or on a smartphone). This title is also available through hoopla as an audiobook! Send us an email at RPLBookGroup@gmail.com to register!”
