Art on Display
We are pleased to present the artwork of Navy Heng for the month of May. Navy is an eclectic artist from Cambodia who lives in the Rochester area. She enjoys using the Dutch Pour technique for creating paintings and quilling techniques for paper painting. Navy draws inspiration from her travels to various countries and finds the act of creating art a form of meditation. She is inspired by the ocean through our connection to it along with the many natural diverse colors of spring and autumn. New Museum Pass
We have a brand new museum pass for library cardholders thanks to the Friends of the Library. The pass to Bedrock Gardens in Lee, NH allows free admission for up to 2 adults and their children and grandchildren. According to their website, Bedrock Gardens “is an emerging public garden that integrates unusual botanical specimens and unique sculpture into an inspiring landscape journey. The 30-acre site is transitioning from a historic farm and private garden to a public oasis of art, horticulture, and inspiration.” The gardens open for the season on May 10.

Introduction to Beanstack
Do you want to participate in the library’s summer reading programs? Join us for a presentation on how to use Beanstack, the program being used for all our summer reading programs this year. On Wednesday, June 1, at 3 pm in the community room Jessica will teach us all about using Beanstack to log our summer reading and collect prizes. Black Bears Program.
Join us for Black Bear Happenings on Wednesday, May 18th, at 6:00 p.m.in the Community Room. This program covers a brief history of wildlife in NH, the Sport Fish Restoration Program, black bear natural history, research, and management in NH. Black Bear Happenings is a presentation of the NH Fish & Game Dept. It will be presented by Doug Whitfield & Dennis Walsh who are both Wildlife Stewards with NH Fish & Game. It covers the life cycle of Black Bears, their habitat needs, and ways to avoid potentially costly conflict with humans.
Health Market Connect
Health Market Connect will be conducting weekly workshops in the Community Room on Wednesdays from 10 am -1 pm through May 25. HMC employees will be here to meet with and assist local residents in finding and enrolling in affordable (or sometimes free) insurance plans available to them. They do not (and legally cannot) charge for their services, nor do they favor one plan or insurance company over another or earn a commission. They are 100% funded through a grant to provide these services to New Hampshire residents.
Children’s Room: Our new imaginative-play activity is all about plants! Celebrate SPRING with us in the Children’s room.
Children’s Pop-up Programs: We will be offering occasional Pop-Up programming outdoors on the lawn starting mid-May. Pop-Up programs will be announced on our Facebook page and Instagram by 9:15 am, and email subscribers will also get a notification in their inbox.
New Display: RPL Librarian, Amy, shares: “This month’s Fiction display in the Children’s room is very mysterious! We have a wide selection of standalone mystery books for all reading levels, including The Great Googlestein Museum Mystery, Paige Proves It, and The Secret Starling. We also have your next mystery series sorted by age level on bookmarks, including You Choose, Mac B. Spy Kid, and Brixton Brothers. Come get yours today!
The Summer Reading Program: the SRP begins Monday, June 13, and will run for seven weeks! If you haven’t guessed from the slogan, there is going to be an ocean in Children’s Room! You will find an octopus, fish, a coral reef, and more. A calendar of all summer events will be available toward the end of May at the Children’s Room desk and on the library website.
Summer Reading Program Kickoff: Join us for the summer kickoff on the lawn from 2:30-4:00 pm on Wednesday, June 15. We will have ice cream, a Storywalk™, and a visit with Rochester Police Department Community Engagement Officer Brandon Kimbrough. Should inclement weather occur we will have a smaller event inside the Children’s Room.
Beanstack logging: We will be using Beanstack again for logging minutes read. Register on the website rplnhreads.beanstack.org or download the Beanstack App on the Play or App Store.
The program will run for 7 weeks, ending Friday, July 29. All children 2 and up are welcome regardless of their reading abilities or any other limitations. If you have any questions, please ask us.
RPL Animated Recommendations
Main Desk Librarian (and syndicated cartoonist) Stephanie, and Main Desk Librarian, Karyl, have created a series of weekly animated videos recommending books, DVDs, and other titles available at the Library. Check them out on our website, Facebook, and Instagram accounts.
