Bicyclist Rides Through Busy Intersection Without Stopping, Gets Struck By Car

On May 9, 2023, at approximately 3 pm, Rochester Police responded to the corner of Portland Street and Signal Street for a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a bicyclist.

The initial investigation revealed that a motorist had been traveling eastbound on Portland Street when a bicyclist exiting Signal Street (headed toward Olsen Way) did not stop at the stop sign before crossing Portland Street. The motorist took evasive action but was unable to avoid colliding with the bicyclist.

The bicyclist, 22-year-old Garry Heaton of Rochester, was transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Heaton was issued a citation for a violation of NH RSA 265:143, Application of Motor Vehicle Laws to Bicycles.
