Join HAVEN at the 10th Annual Kids Are Our Business Breakfast

HAVEN invites all members of the community to the 10th Annual Kids Are Our Business Breakfast on Friday, April 9, 2021, from 8:30-9:30 AM for this exciting virtual event. This popular breakfast event brings the community together to learn about the research-based violence prevention programming being offered here in Southeastern New Hampshire.

This year the HAVEN award-winning education team will be exploring the topic of “How to Respond To A Child Who Discloses Abuse”.  This dynamic program brought to you by HAVEN’s Safe Kids Strong Teens violence prevention educators, addresses how to compassionately and appropriately react if a child or teen chooses to disclose their abuse to you as a trusted adult. Research shows that over 94% of children who are sexually abused know their perpetrator and that person is in their families’ close circle.

Disclosing abuse is difficult, children are often scared, embarrassed and confused, and frequently are being manipulated by their abuser. Most people are not trained advocates but there are skills we can all learn to better respond to disclosures of traumatic experiences and offer support. Director of Education and Training, Sarah Shanahan says, “When adults learn how to best listen and respond to children and teens who have suffered the trauma of abuse, they are better equipped to take the right steps in getting that child help and reporting to the appropriate places.”

In addition to learning how to respond to a disclosure and what happens afterward, attendees will hear about the Safe Kids Strong Teens programming HAVEN presents to schools in Southeastern NH that is helping students, teachers, and families build safer, stronger communities.
