At approximately 5:25 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2025, the Rochester Fire Department responded to a reported building fire at 9 Dustin Homestead. A 911 caller reported possible fire conditions inside the building, prompting the dispatch of Engine 4, Engine 3, Truck 6, and Car 4 (Shift Commander).
A Rochester Police Department officer was first to arrive on scene and reported visible smoke coming from the structure. The officer also advised dispatch that an occupant was still inside. In response, a first alarm (Box Alarm) was struck, bringing in mutual aid units and off-duty Rochester firefighters.
Upon arrival, Car 4 (the Shift Commander) established command. Fire crews quickly forced entry and initiated an aggressive interior fire attack and search. One unconscious victim was located inside the building and removed by firefighters. Basic life support was administered on scene until care was transferred to Frisbie Memorial Hospital EMS. The patient was initially transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital and later transferred to a hospital in Massachusetts for further treatment.
The fire originated in the basement of the split-level residence and was brought under control quickly, preventing extension to other units in the building.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Rochester Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office, in collaboration with the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office. Preliminary reports suggest the cause was accidental and not suspicious at this time.
Mutual aid at the scene was provided by the Dover, Somersworth, and Farmington Fire Departments. Station coverage was provided by the Berwick, Barrington, and Milton Fire Departments, ensuring continued protection for the City of Rochester during the incident.
The Rochester Fire Department extends its appreciation to all responding agencies for their swift and professional response.
