Reminder: Conservation Commission Announces 2025 Rain Barrel Program

The Conservation Commission for the City of Rochester is pleased to announce the 2025 Rain Barrel Program.

Stormwater runoff is a growing concern in developed areas with many impervious surfaces like roads, rooftops, and parking lots. Unlike natural landscapes, these surfaces prevent water from soaking into the ground, leading to increased flooding, streambank erosion, and pollution in rivers and lakes. In fact, over 90% of water quality issues in New Hampshire are linked to stormwater runoff.

Rain barrels are a simple and effective way to conserve water and reduce stormwater runoff. By collecting rainwater from rooftops, these barrels provide free water for lawns, gardens, and indoor plants. Additionally, reducing runoff helps prevent water pollution, flooding, and protects drinking water resources.

Residents can purchase a rain barrel for the discounted price of $90–$99 by visiting www.greatamericanrainbarrel.com/community/ and selecting “Rochester.” The deadline to order is June 8, 2025, at midnight. Barrels will be available for pickup on Saturday, June 21, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Rochester Public Works Department, located at 209 Chestnut Hill Road.

For those interested in creating their own stormwater solutions, DIY resources and fact sheets are available through Soak Up the Rain NH at www.soaknh.des.nh.gov.
