RMFA to exhibit original works by Somersworth Mayor Matt Gerding

The Rochester Museum of Fine Arts is pleased to announce “Weekend Wanderings: Explorations Not Too Far Off the Main Trail”, an art exhibition featuring works by Matt Gerding in the Bernier Room, at the James W. Foley Memorial Community Center, starting November 4, 2024.

Matt is a painter, educator, and Mayor from Somersworth, whose work is deeply inspired by the conserved natural areas of Seacoast New Hampshire, Southern Maine, and the Great North Woods.

As both a science teacher and local elected official overseeing numerous city parks, Matt’s art often centers around outdoor spaces, drawing from the beauty of the landscapes near his home. Working primarily with oil paints, he creates textured, vibrant pieces that capture scenes not far from the trail’s edge.

Through his work, Matt hopes to inspire others to explore the local sites featured in his art, stating “As an 8th grade science teacher and parent to two high schoolers, I find myself telling kids all too often to ‘go outside.’ It seems only fair that I take my own advice.”

“Weekend Wanderings: Explorations Not Too Far Off the Main Trail” will be on display until January 31, 2025, with a reception planned for December 7, 2024, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The public is encouraged to attend. The James W. Foley Memorial Community Center is located at 150 Wakefield Street, Rochester, NH 03867. Visit mattgerdingart.com and www.rochestermfa.org to learn more.

The museum gratefully acknowledges the generous support of its corporate sponsors, community partners, and collaborators, including the City of Rochester, Meredith Village Savings Bank, Back Hill Beer Co., Creative Guts Podcast, and the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce.
