Rochester Police Department Reminds Motorists and Cyclists to Share the Road Safely

As we enter the warmer months, more cyclists are taking to the roads. The Rochester Police Department is reminding all road users—both drivers and bicyclists—that safety is a shared responsibility. New Hampshire law recognizes bicycles as vehicles, and both motorists and bicyclists are expected to follow the same rules of the road.

For Motorists:

  • Bicyclists have the same rights and duties as drivers. Motorists must yield to bicyclists when turning, merging, or opening doors.
  • State law requires drivers to give bicyclists at least 3 feet of clearance when passing.
  • It is legal to cross a solid yellow line to pass a bicyclist safely.
  • Expect bicyclists to use full lanes when needed, especially to avoid hazards or prepare for turns.
  • Always use turn signals, yield signs, and come to a complete stop at stop signs, including for bicycles.

For Bicyclists:

  • Bicyclists must obey all traffic signals and signs, ride on the right side of the road, and signal before turning.
  • Riding against traffic is both dangerous and illegal.
  • Helmets are required by law for riders under the age of 16.
  • Use designated hand signals to communicate with drivers.
  • Wear visible and reflective clothing, especially when riding in low-light conditions.

The Rochester Police Department encourages everyone to stay alert, be respectful, and make safety a priority. Whether you’re behind the wheel or on two wheels, sharing the road keeps everyone safe.
