As we enter the warmer months, more cyclists are taking to the roads. The Rochester Police Department is reminding all road users—both drivers and bicyclists—that safety is a shared responsibility. New Hampshire law recognizes bicycles as vehicles, and both motorists and bicyclists are expected to follow the same rules of the road.
For Motorists:
- Bicyclists have the same rights and duties as drivers. Motorists must yield to bicyclists when turning, merging, or opening doors.
- State law requires drivers to give bicyclists at least 3 feet of clearance when passing.
- It is legal to cross a solid yellow line to pass a bicyclist safely.
- Expect bicyclists to use full lanes when needed, especially to avoid hazards or prepare for turns.
- Always use turn signals, yield signs, and come to a complete stop at stop signs, including for bicycles.
For Bicyclists:
- Bicyclists must obey all traffic signals and signs, ride on the right side of the road, and signal before turning.
- Riding against traffic is both dangerous and illegal.
- Helmets are required by law for riders under the age of 16.
- Use designated hand signals to communicate with drivers.
- Wear visible and reflective clothing, especially when riding in low-light conditions.
The Rochester Police Department encourages everyone to stay alert, be respectful, and make safety a priority. Whether you’re behind the wheel or on two wheels, sharing the road keeps everyone safe.
