Rochester Public Library: Weekly Update

Edited by Stephanie Piro Nolan

The Library is now open for browsing without appointments. We look forward to seeing our patrons coming in to choose materials! The Children’s Room will host its first Story Walk, June 5th. Other walks are scheduled throughout the summer.

Appointment Free Browsing!

The Rochester Public Library is now open for browsing without needing an appointment!  We are open Mon-Wed 9:00-8:00 and Thur.-Fri 9:00-5:00

As NH vaccination rates go up and Covid-19 cases go down, we are returning to more normal library services. RPL to-Go, the Library’s curbside service, will continue through the summer,

Initially, the Library will be open at half capacity. This shouldn’t have any impact on patrons using the main or second floors of the Library, but it may impact families using the Children’s Room.  We will be as accommodating as we can for families, but this is the age group that doesn’t yet have access to vaccinations, so we are erring on the side of caution. Still, we hope families will feel comfortable coming to the Library; the Children’s Room is getting ready to start its Summer Reading Program on June 21st, and they have a number of outdoor programs planned.

Summer Reading Programs for Teens and Adults are also being planned.

Tech Help Returns

Tech Help appointments have resumed. Anyone needing help with Library related technology can now call the Library to schedule an appointment.

Kait’s Recommendations

Assistant Librarian, Kait, reads a LOT and always has good recommendations. This week she says:

“Today I’d like to share some of my favorite non-fairy tale retellings with you. I’ve got some mythology retellings, a couple of Shakespeare retellings, some different takes on history, and a few other classic stories retold!

  1. My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand by Brodi Ashton, Jodi Meadows
  2. And I Darken by Kiersten White
  3. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
  4. Lady Macbeth’s Daughter by Lisa M. Klein
  5. Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige
  6. Speak Easy, Speak Love by McKelle George
  7. The Dead Queens Club by Hannah Capin
  8. The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White
  9. The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins
  10. This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron

For more book lists like these and other bookish fun, follow Kait Plus Books at kaitplusbooks.com or @kaitplusbooks on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Goodreads”

Teen Zone

Now through August 4th, teens can access SYNC, a free summer audiobook program for teens 13+.  Titles are available worldwide and change every Thursday at midnight (Eastern time, during the season). Titles are accessible through Sora, the student reading app from Overdrive, and are Mac and Windows compatible. Each SYNC audiobook will be available to borrow into your SYNC library for a period of 7 days (only). Once loaded into the app, titles are yours indefinitely.

Children’s Room:

Children’s Room Librarian, Christina, shares: “RPL Children’s Room is excited to be collaborating with other community organizations to bring the STORYWALK® program to different locations throughout the city.  STORYWALK® provides an opportunity for physical activity while nurturing a child’s interest in books.  Pages from a children’s book are posted on signs and placed along a walking trail.  As you move along the trail, you are directed to the next page in the story.

The Children’s Room will be sharing this summer’s first StoryWalk® at the YMCA of Strafford County’s Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, June 5th 11:00am-2:00pm.  The event will be held at Camp Coney Pine located at 63 Lowell Street.

Other walks are planned throughout the summer at The Rochester Farmers Market, Pickering Ponds Trail, and one on the Library lawn.

The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.  Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.”

Friends of the Library Book Club

The Friends of the Library book group will meet on June 14th, to discuss the book Waking Up White by Debby Irving.

The Friends meet on the second Monday of each month at 1 p.m. on the lawn next to the Ground Floor entrance to the Library. They will meet outside until it is possible to bring the group back inside the Library. .Everyone is welcome! Books are available for curbside pickup by calling 603-332-1428 ex. 2.  Please bring your own chair. If you have any questions, please give us a call or email us at RPLBookGroup@gmail.com. We hope to see you there!”
