Veterans living in Strafford County are eligible for the Vouchers for Veterans program. The program gives veterans vouchers valued at $20/per week, throughout the month of September, for use at designated Farmers’ Markets.
“In order to thank veterans for their service, the Vouchers for Veterans program is funded primarily by residents and businesses from around Strafford County,” said Jeanne Grover, Vouchers for Veterans president. “They want to show their recognition and gratitude for the many sacrifices our veterans have made protecting our freedoms.”
The program operates only during the month of September when farmers and growers have an abundance of crops. Purchases made by veterans keep the markets vibrant and help to keep money in the local community.
“We encourage veterans to visit the Vouchers for Veterans bright red tent at the Rochester Common, and with proof of service and residency, you will receive vouchers,” said Grover. “Veterans can pick up their vouchers each Tuesday between 1:30-6pm, during the month of September. The vouchers are for use at both the Rochester Farmers’ Market on Tuesdays 3-6pm and/or the Dover Farmers’ Market on Wednesday 2:15-6pm.”
Vouchers for Veterans also provides a representative of Veterans Services to help veterans obtain and understand their benefits and available resources.
“The Farmers’ Market is an ideal place to bring Veterans together as it provides a fresh and clean atmosphere where they can sit to have heartfelt conversations,” explained Grover. “Combat veterans have the opportunity to connect or “open up” to one another, validating they are not alone in dealing with their personal challenges. These conversations can help initiate or further the healing process.”
Vouchers for Veterans is a 501-c-3 nonprofit and has been in operation since 2016. The group is led by a dedicated all-volunteer board that is passionate about helping veterans and keeping money in the local economy.
