Tony Hoffman, a nationally recognized speaker and passionate advocate for substance misuse prevention, delivered a powerful and engaging presentation to students from Spaulding High School, Bud Carlson Academy (grades 9–12), and Rochester Middle School’s 8th-grade class.
Hoffman’s visit left a lasting impression on both students and faculty. Drawing from his lived experiences, he shared deeply personal stories that highlighted the challenges of substance misuse, while offering hope, resilience, and actionable steps for prevention and recovery.
His dynamic presentation was part of the Rochester School District’s ongoing commitment to substance misuse prevention and intervention. Combining real-life narratives with research-based insights and practical advice, Hoffman created an interactive and impactful experience that resonated across age groups.
A sophomore from Spaulding High School reflected on the event, saying:
“It was amazing to listen to how he was able to overcome his addiction and now shares how to navigate life as a teenager. It was very impactful to hear what got him through his anxiety—especially as a teenager with anxiety. Hearing his tools and story will stick with me for a very long time. Having a speaker like Hoffman is a great resource for teenagers trying to navigate life and their emotions. I hope he visits and speaks here again in the future!”
Following the presentation, students participated in a Q&A session that further explored themes such as recovery, mental health, and the importance of community support.
“Substance misuse affects individuals and communities in profound ways, and I’m grateful for opportunities to speak with young people about making choices that will positively shape their futures,” Hoffman said. “It was inspiring to see so many students open up to me about the challenges they face. Through these conversations, we can collectively work toward a healthier, more informed community.”
The event also reinforced the district’s dedication to offering ongoing support for students struggling with substance misuse. Rochester Middle School Principal Ryan Gilpatrick emphasized the importance of early intervention:
“Tony Hoffman made a masterful presentation to students and staff at RMS. He told his story of struggles with mental health and addiction and emphasized the importance of setting goals and being disciplined in working toward them. His heartfelt story engaged the audience and naturally connected them to Tony’s message. He echoed the importance of finding a trusted adult when facing challenges—a message our staff embraces as we continue to support our students.”
