Union Street Parking Lot to receive major refurbishment in 2025

The Union Street parking lot in downtown Rochester is set for a major refurbishment, with construction expected between the spring and fall of 2025.

The project, budgeted at $1.75 million, aims to improve functionality and environmental sustainability. The lot will see its capacity slightly increase from 97 to 99 spaces, including handicapped and electric vehicle charging spots and a consolidated dumpster coral for nearby businesses and residents.

Significant environmental improvements include bioretention basins, tree filter boxes, and a closed drainage system to effectively manage stormwater runoff, protecting the nearby Cocheco River.

Additionally, the Barker Court entry off Wakefield Street will be converted to a pedestrian pathway, enhancing access to City Hall and the Opera House, and a new pocket park along Union Street will offer the possibility of outdoor dining, benches, and a public art installation.

Some parking spaces will remain open throughout construction. The revamp follows preparatory work at the former Ben Franklin site, which will see updates to lighting, pavement, and striping to alleviate parking concerns during the reconstruction of the Union Street parking lot.

For more information, watch the Public Works Committee meeting from May 23, 2024 and the Planning Board Meeting from June 3, 2024.
