The Franklin Gallery at RiverStones Custom Framing, 33 N. Main Street in Rochester, will host an exhibit during the month of October called Circumnavigating a Square, featuring the work of local artist Taintor Davis Child. An opening reception will be held on Friday, October 3, from 5 to 6:30. The public is invited to attend, meet the artist and view the artwork. Light refreshments will be served.
“I have always loved rulers and compasses and pencils and erasers,” says Child, “and I really love squares because circles fit so neatly inside and they must have 4 sides with equal lengths! This is one great rule in geometry. And the center of a square is so easy to find! Just draw straight lines across from corner to opposite corners and where they cross is the middle of the square. This point of origin is where I begin to draw with a compass and pencil to Circumnavigate A Square and build each of these painting’s symmetrical designs.”
Record albums and their covers, a classic circle in a square design, also comforted Taintor as a child and young teen. “I treasured my record players, those square boxes holding a round turntable. Maybe this design comfort was born on those mesmerizing afternoons spent watching the precious vinyl discs spin and enthrall me with the marvel of music and technology.” This activity was further enhanced with kaleidoscope gazing, spirograph drawings and collecting glass seed beads. Child remembers sweetly the hours beading patterns and making pendants wishing she was part of a nomadic tribe and hoping for peace.
“Circumnavigating the bounds of these 40 inch squares with brush and paint takes me home to a welcoming and joyful space born from love and wonder and endless curiosity.”
Child graduated from Clark University and the Worcester Art Museum’s Fine Art Diploma Program and received her B.A. from Lesley University in a self-designed program integrating Creative Arts, Environmental Studies, and Early Childhood Education. She is a lifelong student of nature, visual art, and spiritual practices and techniques. She is a Certified Mindfulness Meditation Instructor.
