The New Hampshire Department of Safety Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) is participating in National Preparedness Month during September to help increase emergency preparedness awareness throughout the state.
This year’s national theme is “Americans Stand Ready” and will focus on encouraging people to “take charge of their own readiness.” HSEM will include this theme in agency messaging throughout the month of September. In addition, HSEM will focus on no- or low-cost ways to be prepared.
“National Preparedness Month is a great time for you and your family to prepare for emergencies,” said HSEM Director Robert Buxton. “Being prepared doesn’t have to cost a lot. Signing up for alerts, planning with family members and getting involved are all free tasks you can complete.”
New Hampshire residents and visitors can take four easy steps to be prepared.
- Stay informed: Sign up for emergency alerts in your community and have a way to monitor National Weather Service reports.
- Have a plan: Download the family emergency plan at ReadyNH.gov and take time to complete it. Include all family members in your plan, including pets and children.
- Make a kit: Download the shopping list on ReadyNH.gov. Look around your house for items you may already have, and shop discount stores and sales for low-cost options.
- Get involved: Join a local volunteer group and work with your neighbors to create a directory that includes contact information and professions or specialty skills.
