Historic District Commission seeks new members to fill several vacancies

The Rochester Historic District Commission (HDC) is seeking new members to fill vacancies on the committee.

According to Chairperson Molly Meulenbroek, joining the commission provides an opportunity for meaningful and direct involvement in the ongoing revitalization and redevelopment of downtown Rochester.

“Participating in local government as a volunteer is a rewarding way to support our community,” said Meulenbroek.

The purpose of the Historic District Commission is to promote the general welfare of the community by:

  • Safeguarding the cultural, social, political, and economic heritage of the City;
  • Fostering the preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation of structures and places of historic, architectural, and community value;
  • Fostering civic pride in the beauty and noble accomplishments of the past;
  • Furthering the attractiveness of the City of Rochester to home buyers, tourists, visitors, and shoppers, thereby providing economic benefit to the City;
  • Conserving and improving the value of property in the District; and
  • Enhancing opportunities, where applicable, for financial benefits for owners of historic properties through grants, low-interest loans, tax credits, and other tax benefits.

The HDC consists of seven members and up to five alternate members. Two regular members and two alternate members are designated for a member of the City Council and a member of the Planning Board. All members except for the Planning Board member are appointed by the City Council. Members are appointed for terms of three years.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the HDC, visit the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall to complete and file a Statement of Interest form, which can be found here.
