Rochester Police Issue Vehicle Theft Warning, Offers Tips to Keep Your Car Secure

Published on

Over the past couple of weeks, the Rochester Police Department (RPD) has responded to two motor vehicle thefts that occurred because the keys were left inside an unlocked, running vehicle while it was warming up. RPD would like to share some precautionary tips to help vehicle owners prevent becoming victims of this crime:

Safety Tips to Prevent Vehicle Thefts

  1. Keep your vehicle locked at all times – even when you are inside it.
  2. Always remove your keys from the ignition when you exit your vehicle. Do not leave keys under the seat, in the visor, the center console, or anywhere else inside the vehicle. Take them with you whenever you leave your vehicle.
  3. Ensure all vehicle windows are fully closed, and make sure your sunroof is securely shut.
  4. Never leave your vehicle running while unattended. This includes warming it up in your driveway, making quick stops at a store, or dropping something off at a friend’s house. Turn the vehicle off and take the keys with you.
  5. Park in well-lit areas whenever possible. If there are security or surveillance cameras nearby, choose a parking spot within view of the cameras.
  6. Install motion-activated lights where your vehicle is parked.
  7. Store keys inside your home or office in a secure location. Avoid leaving keys in an unlocked or easily accessible garage or shed. Lock all doors and windows leading to garages or sheds.
  8. Invest in anti-theft devices, surveillance systems, or services like OnStar to protect your vehicle.
  9. Avoid leaving valuables in plain sight or even inside your vehicle. Do not give anyone a reason to break in.
  10. Report stolen vehicles and license plates to the police immediately.
