Arts organizers seek community volunteers to assist with downtown mural

Published on

The Rochester Museum of Fine Arts, in collaboration with Rochester Main Street, has partnered with Waypoint NH to complete a mural on the new Youth Resource Center & Family Preservation Center on Wallace St.

In the summer of 2021, the RMFA commissioned Durkish Delights Design Co. (Alton, NH) to design a mural to be painted on more than 30 jersey barriers needed to create outdoor dining spaces during the pandemic. According to RMFA cofounder Matt Wyatt, the RMFA looks to recycle the design for another, larger mural.

The original purpose of the design

“We are re-purposing the design since the cement barriers are no longer in use,” said Wyatt. “The designer will essentially enlarge the design and trace it onto the building, allowing volunteers to fill it in… Sort of like a supersized paint-by-number.”

Conceived by artist Mike Durkee, the design features a continuous five-color gradient mountain range and skyscape. The colors are graphic, bold, and sure to get attention from passing motorists and pedestrians.

Organizers welcome community members aged 12+ to help paint on Thursday, August 24th. All paint and supplies will be provided. Waypoint is planning a BBQ for volunteers. Please RSVP to matt@rochestermfa.org to be included.
