Attorney General John M. Formella announces enhanced coordination between the New Hampshire Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in response to an ongoing scam targeting E-ZPass users in New Hampshire and across the region.

This announcement follows a March 18, 2025 consumer alert jointly issued by the New Hampshire DOJ, Department of Transportation, and Division of Motor Vehicles warning residents of a text-message scam that falsely claims unpaid tolls will be reported to the DMV, prompting consumers to make fraudulent payments.

As part of this expanded effort, the FTC and the NH DOJ will work together to help residents report these scams more efficiently and share relevant complaint data to identify patterns and disrupt scam operations. The public is now encouraged to report any such scams directly to the FTC via their secure online portal at: reportfraud.ftc.gov

The scam continues to involve fraudulent text messages that appear to come from “E-ZPass,” threatening additional fees or DMV consequences if immediate payment is not made. Officials reiterate that NH E-ZPass does not send payment requests via text message, and any legitimate communication regarding tolls or registration holds will come through official channels like mail or the E-ZPass NH website or app.

Residents are reminded:

• Do not click on suspicious links in unsolicited messages.
• Always verify your toll account through the official NH E-ZPass website: www.ezpassnh.com or the official mobile app.
