RMFA opens The Pixel Room, a digital art gallery

The Rochester Museum of Fine Arts (RMFA) is pleased to announce the opening of The Pixel Room, a 144 sq. ft. digital art gallery, located in Suite 135 of the James W. Foley Memorial Community Center.

According to co-founder Amy Regan, the idea for The Pixel Room came out of the COVID-19 shutdowns in early 2020. Due to CDC recommendations at the time, curators were unable to meet in person or physically handle art. In response, the museum temporarily shifted to exhibiting art on several digital monitors.

Regan says the situation became an opportunity to collaborate with new artists from anywhere in the world. Due to the simplicity of the arrangement, the museum has already featured art from as far as Bangalore, India.

The practice of digitally exhibiting art continued even after fully reopening to the public.

“With the opening of The Pixel Room, our digital shows have a physical location equipped with the necessary hardware and software needed to create an interesting viewing experience,” said Regan. “The space is outfitted with a large 4K UHD LED monitor that rotates images. It’s a great addition to our traditional, in-person exhibitions.”

Opening Thursday, December 1st, The Pixel Room is showcasing a series of works by Cindy Rizza.

Rizza is a classically trained, award-winning, internationally recognized, representational oil painter. Her iconic representations of familiar domestic subjects summon conflicting feelings of comfort and insecurity, shelter and confinement, and love and loss. She grew up in Massachusetts and Maine during her early years, and has remained in New England now living and working in Southern New Hampshire. Rizza’s work has been exhibited and collected internationally. Visit www.cindyrizza.com to learn more.

The Pixel Room is located off the Mayor Harvey E. Bernier Room, in Suite 135 of the James W. Foley Memorial Community Center, 150 Wakefield Street, Rochester, NH. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm. Visit www.rochestermfa.org to learn more.

The museum is sponsored by the City of Rochester, Rochester Main Street, Waterstone Properties Group, Bernier Insurance, Meredith Village Savings Bank, MacEdge, and the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce.
